George and Rosemary is about an elderly man by the name of George Edgecombe and his desire to work up the nerve to ask his elderly neighbour across the road for a date. George quietly spies on Rosemary and watches her come and go while he tries to work up the nerve to ask her out on a date.
The inspiration for the film came from research as to what elderly people were most interested in. David and Alison visited care homes and talked to the residents and while in many ways, they fit the cliche about liking to watch travelogue movies and play cards, they also talked often about romantic interests amongst the residents. There was discussion about much flirting and cheeky behaviour and that inspired the story. The desire was to assert the notion that despite being old, you can still have passion in your heart.
This whimsical 9 minute film won a number of awards including an Oscar nomination, a Canadian Academy award (A Genie!) and first prize at the Zagreb animation festival.
George and Rosemary was also selected as one of John Lassiter’s top ten favourite short films at the Bristol Animation Festival.
